Singer, songwriter, humanitarian and friend of MWOTY, Claire Mooney, has passed away following a long and brave battle with cancer.

Claire had been determined to perform at this year’s MWOTY 2024 awards, and when her illness meant that wasn’t possible, Claire typically found a way, recording the song for us to play and sing along to on the day, ensuring her special brand of joy and wit was still central to our celebrations.

MWOTY Founding Director, Ellie Kerr, said: “Over the years Claire had become a key feature of the MWOTY awards, writing her uplifting bespoke song celebrating women, mentioning all our Finalists and sponsors and the sectors they were involved in.

“She choreographed it until the end, as she suggested we shake our maracas onstage this year, so we did just that in her honour! Her unique talent and heart will be very much missed.”

Described by NME as ‘a real talent’ Claire Mooney wrote and performed monthly topical songs about the news for BBC Radio Manchester, as well as being commissioned to write bespoke songs for a wide range of events, including previous MWOTY ceremonies. Claire passed away on Monday 12th August 2024.

The MWOTY movement would like to send their most heartfelt condolences to Claire’s partner Carol and all of her family and friends. It was a pleasure to have Claire write and perform for us over the years and we will continue to shake our maracas in her much beloved memory!
