MWOTY 2022 Finalist, Ithalia Johnson is gearing up for the “Powerful Gal Bacchanal” an electrifying celebration of Liverpool’s diverse Black women through dance and culture and is seeking participants and sponsors.
The empowering journey through dance and culture, specifically designed for Liverpool’s diverse Black women, creating space to acknowledge experiences of sexual exploitation, isolation, and discrimination, while celebrating the healing power of Black dance and culture.
Participants will harness the energy of Oshun, the goddess of femininity and love, alongside the exhilarating rhythms of Soca dance. Classes are free to attend and open to diverse Black girls and women (under 16s must be accompanied by an adult), and girls and women who want champion equity and perform in a joyful celebration of Black dance and culture.
The programme will culminate in a series of performances:
- Saturday 20th April 10am – 1pm @ St Georges Gardens: Be part of “The Wave” an immersive dance film capturing Liverpool’s cultural treasures with the ebb and flow of the Mersey tide.
- LEAP Dance Festival – Saturday 6th May: Be part of an electrifying public performance at LEAP Dance Festival. Join us as we celebrate liberation, joy, and the vibrant narrative of diverse Black female representation.
The programme is also seeking sponsors to help make the performances really shine, with support options including:
- Sponsor a costume – £100 per performer
- Sponsor a drummer – £100 per drummer
- Sponsor a stunning puppet – £500 per puppet
The performance will feature up to 20 dancers and five – 10 drummers. Sponsors will be recognised in social media, press releases and radio interviews, with scope to continue working as the project builds up to Black History Month 2024.
Deadline to confirm sponsorship is Monday 15th April.
