Joint Merseyside Woman of the Year 2019: Laura Hughes

Laura Hughes is the sister of Colin McGinty, who was brutally stabbed to death in a shocking case of mistaken identity in 2001.

Sadly, since Colin’s death, the number of knife crime victims have risen at an alarming rate. Laura believes that there is a danger that young people will start to believe that carrying a knife is normal and campaigns and fundraises to prevent this.

Her positivity is infectious and she is determined to bring about change, to prevent other families enduring the pain hers has suffered and keep Colin’s memory alive.

Laura was first runner up in the 2019 public vote and was named Co-Merseyside Woman of the Year 2019, after Merseyside Woman of the Year 2019, Mia Austin, tragically passed away the day before the annual ceremony. It was Mia and her family’s wish that the accolade be passed on to ensure the MWOTY platform was used to do good work in the region. Laura was also named joint winner in the Social Impact Award 2019, sponsored by  Everton Football Club.
